By studying your tongue eastern medical practitioners are able to tell you a lot about what is going on in your body. A tire is your cars version of a tongue in this respect. Where as you won’t find out if there is anything electrical in you car been foretold by your tire, there are a lot of suspension problems that can be shown through wear patterns in your tires.
There are four different ways that your tread may be worn. If your tire is badly worn, but the wear is even across the tire then all you have to do is replace your tires. You are massively overdue a tire change if you tread bars are visible, tread bars are the metal wires inside your tire.
Sticking a penny into the treads on your tires at their lowest point and seeing if Abraham Lincoln’s head touches the tread gives you a rough estimate of when you need to change your tires. Remember, you are good to go if head touches tread.
If your tires are wearing unevenly that can be an omen of bigger problems for you car. Wear on one side of the tire and not the other usually signifies that your wheels are in need of realigning. The most common cause for your wheels to needing a realignment is a problem with a worn ball joint or with your arm control bushings. This specific wearing pattern could also mean that there could be an issue with sagging springs, which means that this type of wear pattern will need you to have a qualified mechanic look at your car.
Under-inflating you tires will cause wear to occur on the inner and outer treads without wearing the center treads. That being said, if you are being careful to make sure that you are always inflating your tires correctly and using a pressure gauge then this type of wear could mean the you have a bent or worn steering component. You may also need to have your wheels realigned. If you put too much air into your tires on a regular basis this will cause the center treads of your tire to wear down. This wear pattern could be caused because your rims are too narrow for the tires you are using and changing to different tires or rims would sort this problem out in a second.
Strange wear patterns that you should be on the look out for include feathering, this means that the tire is sharp on one side and rounded on the other. The best way to find out if you have this problem is to rub your hands over you tires, this will allow you to feel these symptoms before they manifest enough for you to see. If you are suffering from second-rib wear and cupping this could indicate that there might be a problem with a worn or bent suspension part or, at best, the wrong size of steel belted radials.
To avoid these problems causing additional damage to your car it if best to check your tires on a regular basis. Feeling your tires and performing the penny test once or twice a week is a good way of discovering any additional problems.
