Which Ones are the Best for Women DIY Enthusiasts – 12 Volt Power Tools or 18 Volt?

It used to be that if you heard the whine and clatter of a power tool in your neighborhood you would casually picture in your head how the burly dad next door was at it again, jeans riding down his behind, saying something like, “ Now man it up, son, and pick up that two-by-four.”

It just so happens now though that those words could float over in a woman’s voice just as likely as a man’s. More women are taking part in the work force and do-it-yourself projects. Women are the new flag-bearers of the home-improvement movement, even if the dialogue is likely to come off a touch more politically correct now. And 12 volt power tools are what are making all this possible.

Get Northern Tools Low Price Guarantee – if within 30 days you find a identical product nationally advertised for less, you get 110% of the difference back. Just mail a copy of the advertisement with the offer’s expiration date visible

A simple look around the Internet can vouch for this; power tool manufacturers all over are trying to position themselves as the people every woman do-it-yourselfer needs to turn to, with the range that has the lightest tools, the prettiest tools, and the tools that are the easiest and quietest to use. Women are by no means less capable with their hands than men; but women do have less physical strength, smaller hands and are less tall.

The market for cordless power tools has traditionally been all about more power and more brute force, styling, weight and size be damned. Manufacturers have answered the call for more power with larger tools, tools with 24 and 32 volt power supplies and battery packs that could run a small car (why, some 18 V drills can weigh as much as 7 pounds!). Manufacturers today are having to rethink their philosophies as they are called on to make smaller precision power tools without sacrificing on weight or size. As it turns out 12 volt power tools are the answer.

Delta – Dewalt – Porter Cable – McCulloch Chain Saws – Bosch – Skil – Stanley – Bostitch – Toro – Dremel – Hitatchi – Ryobi – Honda Generators – Ramesey Winch – Lincoln – Briggs and Stratton – North Star – Hobart Welding Products – Milwaukee – Ingersoll Rand – Makita and many more top brands. Hundreds of items on Sale at NorthernTool.com

Panasonic, Makita, Hitachi and Porter Cable have some pretty nifty choices in the 12 volt power tools range today. Ergonomics have been Makita’s strong suite for a while now; for instance, brands like Hitachi and DeWalt have a regular sliding-panel mechanism for battery replacement; Makita uses a single button that pops out the spring-loaded battery for replacement. But some women may find that the typical range of 12 volt power tools is a bit lacking in the power they need, as easy to use as they are. Ergonomics can become an even more important issue when there is the added weight of an extra-powerful tool to deal with.

Tools Bin … a tool for every purpose .: discount air and power tools, and a lot of class :.

The thing with weight in 12 volt power tools or their 18 volt cousins is that a proper balance or distribution of weight can often and make a tool much easier to handle than their weight per se would suggest. When you go out and buy a power tool, you need to hold it in your hand and actually give it a turn. If the weight seems evenly balanced and it allows the tool to fit easily in your grip without requiring a tight grasp on the handle to keep it upright, you have your tool.

For women users today with battery technology where it is, 12 volt power tools seem to be where all the action is. But you could get away conceivably, with choosing 18 volt power tools too. Lithium Ion batteries these days are much lighter than the traditional Nickel Cadmium and Nickel Metal Hydride models; if you can find more powerful tools with lighter batteries, it should be just the ticket.

Anytime that you see an advertisement for an appliance that works at 12 volts DC, you know that they’ve thought of yet one more indulgence for the mobile enthusiast: the car lover who likes to kit out his car with every known electronic device, the boating enthusiast who loves the idea of showing off how every convenience of a normal home finds a place in his boat, and of course the cross-country fan who loves the idea of towing his own RV home all over the country. Appliances need to run at 12 volts DC to be able to accept a connection to a standard car battery, the only reliable power source when you are a hundred miles from nowhere. For the boat or RV enthusiast, the convenience of running water, sometimes even a shower at the touch of a button, can seem like a king’s life; and this is made possible by your trusty old 12v water pump.

Owners of 12v water pumps often notice two annoying qualities to their ownership experience: the water out of the tap doesn’t run uniformly, it pulses instead; and of course there is the problem that these pumps can be quite noisy. Modern 12v water pumps tend to be made with hard wearing plastic parts and not heavy bronze like before. While this does bring down the noise level quite a bit, careless installation can often broadcast the noise, and sometimes even amplify it quite a bit. Most of the rules for how to properly mount your water pump are pretty easy to think of yourself.

In motor homes and on boats, the 12v water pump is used for more than one reason. Boats have a tendency to collect water at the bottom, the area known as the bilge. It is unhealthy to allow water to stagnate around there, and no one ever has the stomach to muck about down there to bail it out. A level-activated automatic 12v water pump can be just the solution to this problem. When coupled with a float valve, these pumps can kick in whenever water collects in there, and can get rid of it overboard on their own. Above-deck, in the living quarters on the boat or in the living quarters on the RV, a pressure-activated 12v water pump can kick in whenever you open a tap. The pump is connected to its own car battery, and it can perform double duty, pulling in water from a sump outside, and then pumping water upstairs to the living quarters.

Make sure is that the pump is mounted on rubber feet: it should be connected to your RV’s plumbing with flexible hoses that do not transmit the noise to the plumbing, the pump should not make contact with the frame of your vehicle through anything other than its rubber feet, and so on. If your pump happens to be quite old, there are rebuild kits available too that can help you replace the parts that are most likely to be worn out.

But if the water put out by a 12v water pump has a pulsating quality to it, that is quite normal. It is just that these pump are always set to cut off water at a certain pressure; it checks constantly to see if it finds the pressure going out of its range. Whenever it senses that the pressure is too much or too little, itcorrects for this: hence the pulsing effect. Traveling with your own plumbing system can be quite a heady experience: especially, everyone must try the feeling of taking a shower, parked on a desert road. These pumps come very reliable these days, and with common sense applied during installation, all should go well.

Not all the modern advances in automotive technology have found a way around sticky everyday problems that confront us: car security that can never guarantee trouble with break-ins, flat tires, and batteries that run flat without warning. You could sometimes run your battery into the ground by forgetting to turn off the headlights, or have a wiring malfunction that could just cause your battery power to dissipate. If you find this happening often, one possible way to address the situation would be to look at 12v battery chargers to keep on hand whenever your battery screws up.

Buying one is not that complicated a deal; you just need to understand the basics of how 12v battery chargers work, and you should be ready to make an informed choice. The first rule in buying 12v battery chargers usually involves checking for compatibility. Your car’s owner’s manual should be your first stop in finding out about this. Most of the time, picking a charger that can put out up to 30 amps of power should be plenty. Trickle charging is a slow charging method, one that takes a full day, but picking this kind of charger minimizes the stress that batteries have to take under normal fast charging, and gives your battery better life expectancy.

While 12v battery chargers are quite simple to use they do require that you observe a few commonsense measures when you use them. Before fooling around with the battery under the hood, you should always turn the car’s engine off first; it makes things safer, and allows the battery to charge better. Even if a car only runs on 12v direct current that is hard to get electrocuted on, you still can’t just go about too casually when it involves electricity; it is best when dealing with 12v battery chargers, to make all the connections first before plugging anything into the wall. Connecting the battery charger’s alligator clips to the battery’s terminals is quite simple, if you always make sure to connect positive to positive and negative to negative. Turning the connections around can sometimes cause the acid in the battery to boil and to cause an explosion.

The 12V battery chargers on the market today come packed with plenty of safety features, thanks to ubiquitous microprocessor technology. Overcharging your battery can sometimes cause what is known as a hydrogen explosion; microprocessor technology usually protects against overcharging. If you feel that playing it cool and all unconcerned is more important than checking off all your safety precautions, it is possible you could get to work wearing say a loose bracelet that could short something out; or perhaps you could plug in your battery charger before you connect the battery to it. When the battery terminal wires dangle around with power in them, they could touch each other and cause quite a pop. Safe modern technology makes sure this does not happen. If you will use alligator clips the wrong size and give your battery a loose connection, you get a few beeps of friendly warning too. There’s really no reason to stay without one of the new 12V battery chargers you see around these days. They will surely get your back in the event of an emergency.
